In Memory of John Barnett CNZM (1945–2025)
We honour the life and legacy of our founder, whose vision and creativity helped define New Zealand’s cultural landscape.

John Barnett devoted more than 50 years to shaping New Zealand’s film and television industry.
He enjoyed many highs and, in his words, a few “lessons learned,” on a journey that spanned film and TV production, film and video distribution, artist management, establishing multiplex cinemas, and building entertainment businesses.
For 25 years until 2015, John led and owned South Pacific Pictures Ltd, New Zealand’s largest TV and film production house, which under his stewardship became responsible for some of the nation’s most successful and best-loved productions.
After selling his interests in South Pacific, John founded Endeavour Ventures Ltd, returning to his roots as an independent producer with a slate of movies and television series. He also gave generously of his time to a wide range of charitable and industry organisations.
98.5% of all New Zealanders have seen a programme produced by John (as he pointed out, some people don’t have TV or go to the movies!) The impressive statistic is a testament to his unparalleled contribution to the cultural life of the country.
Today, Endeavour Ventures continues in a reduced capacity under the stewardship of the John Barnett Family Trust which remains committed to honouring John’s legacy and carrying forward the values and creative excellence he championed.
